It is extremely difficult to quantify exact numbers when considering maternal mortality rates. However in 2005 it is estimated that 536,000 women died worldwide due to complications related to pregnacy and childbirth. Of this, approximatley 265,000 deaths were in sub-saharan Africa where there are approximatley 920 deaths for every 100,000 live births. |

Although the figures found in the three major diseases and health deficiencies in Africa seem far worse on the surface, arguably the most immediatly effective sollution we can develop in our hospitals is to provide a clean and safe delivery room. In Africa the biggest cause of maternal mortality by far is hemorrhaging, which equates for 31% of all pregnany related deaths. By providing a true delivery room, complete with facilities to clean a mother and child and to stop hemorrhaging we can drastically reduce maternal mortallity and give a new born baby a greater chance at a healthy life. |
